Opened in September, the Akasaka branch of Junkadelic has one thing that the Nakameguro original lacks: lunch. Luckily, everything else remains the same, from the rustic interior to the cantina vibe to the fantastic Mexican food. Though the midday menu is limited, it still offers a full lineup of a dozen options, all of which include rice, beans, soup, salad, drink and dessert. With only one exception (the deep-fried chimichanga), all the dinnertime classics make an appearance—and at a heavy discount. Lunch plates include enchiladas (¥800), quesadillas (¥800), tacos (¥1,000), burritos (¥1,000), taco salad (¥800) and even a Junkadelic hamburger (¥1,200). These are complete meals by themselves, but big eaters will want to consider the combination menu that’s posted on the white stucco wall. On our first visit, we splurged for the burrito and enchilada combo (¥1,680), and the mid-workday feast soon commenced with a light green salad and vegetarian tortilla soup with melted cheese. The main plate was massive and sectioned into quadrants for the Mexican rice with tomatoes, refried black beans with cheese, a steaming pile of melted cheese on top of the enchilada, and a vegetable burrito (and by this we mean vegetables—carrots, potatoes and broccoli). Sure it was gluttonous, and sure we had to fight the urge to order a pitcher of blended margarita—but that’s what makes Junkadelic our favorite Mexican restaurant (chain) in Tokyo.
