The great thing about being British is that wherever you go in the world, the food is always better. Still, there are times when only comfort food
will do, and that’s where *The Meguro Tavern’s Sunday Carvery* comes in.
Situated close to Meguro station, this family-run London-style pub is as
authentic as they come right down to the faded upholstery on the seats,
the jangly bell at the door and the broken payphone in the corner. The
carvery is a buffet, with ¥1,950 buying you a selection of meats and all the trimmings; order a drink (draft beers from ¥950/pint, bottles
¥800, soft drinks from ¥500), and the buffet becomes all you can eat.
The roasted meats were good enough to make this Brit cry tears of gravy: tender beef, fatty lamb and firm pork, served with horseradish, mint and apple sauces, respectively. On the side were Yorkshire puddings, roast potatoes and creamy mash. The selection of vegetables was underwhelming: mixed carrots, peas and corn plus the schoolboy’s nemesis, Brussels sprouts, which were crunchy and flavorful nonetheless. All this we drowned in a light gravy. Sitting with a magazine and a spicy Virgin Mary (¥750), the only thing missing from this traditional Sunday repast was a hangover. Luckily, The Meguro Tavern offers those on Saturday nights.
Other feature nights are Live Jazz on Tuesdays. Wednesdays are Steak
Night with ¥1000 NZ Sirloins served with a salad and wedges along with MT's original cajun/garlic butter. And there is also talk of a Comedy Night in the coming months.
Sports fans enjoy LIVE Premier league games on the five screens scattered around the pub. See the web page for details or the notice boards in he pub.
